APRIL 2026
APRIL 2026
Message from Secretary General
Dear Members and supporters,
April has been a busy and productive month for FACE, with important developments across several major EU policy files that directly affect Europe’s hunting community.
One of the most significant outcomes was the finalisation of the new EU Regulation on the welfare of dogs (and cats), which introduces new rules on identification, registration, breeding, and the placing of dogs on the market. Throughout the legislative process, FACE worked to ensure that the final text remains proportionate and recognises the realities of responsible dog ownership and hunting dog breeding across Europe.
At the same time, discussions continued on the European Commission’s proposal to restrict lead in ammunition under the REACH Regulation. This month brought an important revision to the proposal, including the extension of the transition period for lead shot from three years to five years. FACE remains closely engaged on this file, working with Members and partners to ensure practical, workable solutions for hunters and sport shooters.
The debate on the future of the EU’s farm policy has also intensified, particularly around the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the level of funding that will be available for farmers, rural communities, and biodiversity measures. For FACE, securing strong support for farmland biodiversity remains a priority, especially for species such as grey partridge, turtle dove, and hare.
Alongside these files, we have also seen important progress on the Birds Directive guidance, ongoing discussions on wildlife management, and strong international cooperation through events such as the CIC General Assembly in Vienna.
We hope you enjoy the April monthly report.
Warm regards,
Dr. David Scallan
FACE Secretary General
