AEWA – African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement

International Agreements · AEWA

What is AEWA?

250+AEWA covers over 250 species of birds ecologically dependent on wetlands for at least part of their annual cycle, including many important game species.

Unlike many other agreements AEWA has a built-in recognition of the need for conservation, including the sustainable use of migratory species. For this reason it remains a very important agreement for European hunters to cooperate in managing shared populations of migratory birds.

Parties to the Agreement are called upon to engage in a wide range of conservation actions which are described in a comprehensive Action Plan. This detailed plan addresses such key issues as: species and habitat conservation, management of human activities, research and monitoring, education and information, and implementation. It is this Action Plan which forms the basis of the work of the AEWA Secretariat and Committees.
