The European Commission has opened applications for the 2026 Natura 2000 Award, offering an important opportunity to showcase successful conservation initiatives across Natura 2000 sites.

The Natura 2000 Award celebrates outstanding achievements in the management and promotion of Natura 2000 sites, recognising organisations, communities, land managers, researchers, volunteers, and other stakeholders who contribute to the protection of biodiversity while delivering benefits for society.

Applications are open until 16 October 2026 and can be submitted across five categories:

• Conservation on land
• Marine & coastal
• Towns & cities
• Community benefits
• Public engagement

Projects involving hunters and hunting organisations are fully eligible for the Award. Across Europe, hunters play a significant role in habitat restoration, species monitoring, invasive species management, wetland conservation, wildfire prevention, and cooperation with local communities. Many of these activities directly support the conservation goals of Natura 2000 and demonstrate how sustainable wildlife management can generate positive outcomes for both nature and people.

The Natura 2000 Award provides a valuable platform to highlight practical conservation successes and strengthen public understanding of the role that local stakeholders, including hunters, can play in protecting Europe’s natural heritage.

Winning or being shortlisted for the Award can bring increased visibility, strengthen partnerships, and inspire replication of successful approaches across the European Union.

Organisations involved in conservation work on Natura 2000 sites are therefore encouraged to consider applying and sharing their achievements with a wider European audience.
