Do You Want Lead Ammunition to Be Banned? How Did It Happen? | We, the Hunters #9

In this episode of We, the Hunters, we speak with FACE Secretary General David Scallan about one of the most controversial issues facing Europe’s hunting community: the REACH restriction on lead shot.

Why was it impossible to stop the restriction completely? What did FACE do to reduce its impact on hunters?

We address criticisms and the difficult reality of negotiating a proposal that already had political support.

David explains the outcomes, including longer transition periods, the removal of lead bullets and slugs from the proposal, and the need to ensure that suitable and affordable alternatives are available for different firearms.

The final proposal is significantly different from the original. The transition period for lead gunshot has been extended from three to seven years, while bullets and slugs have been removed from its scope. However, important questions remain about older firearms, small gauges, ammunition availability, costs and the future of hunting and shooting.

Was this the best achievable outcome, or should we have taken a different approach?
