Ongoing EU Discussions on Lead in Ammunition: Concerns Over Defence and Security Impacts

The European Union is continuing its work on the proposed restriction of lead in ammunition under the REACH regulation. The proposal is currently under review in the REACH Committee, where representatives from EU Member States are debating the draft legislation with the EC. The latest meeting took place on 26 June.

In a recent meeting of Environment ministers, several Member States raised concerns about the broader consequences of the restriction on Europe’s defence and security requirements. These concerns build on similar points raised in the meeting last month with Agricultural ministers.

For hunters, the significant challenges relate to the proposed short transition periods: 18 months for all centre-fire bullets and 3 years for all lead shot for hunting. The lack of a “review clause” for rimfire ammunition is also concerning, as suitable non-lead ammunition does not yet exist with the same performance as lead.
