The LIFE Wild Wolf project has launched a new series of field trials in the Lazio region of Italy, an area located north of Rome. During the event, hunting dogs were equipped with protective vests developed to help reduce injuries caused by wolf encounters.

The initiative brought together local hunters, the Istituto di Ecologia Applicata, FACE, and DOGTECH to exchange experiences and discuss practical approaches to protecting hunting dogs in areas where wolves are present. Participants were introduced to the latest developments in protective equipment and the project's ongoing efforts to evaluate prevention measures under real hunting conditions.

Lazio offers densely vegetated landscapes, rugged terrain, and active hunting traditions which reflect conditions found across many regions of southern Europe.

A key focus of the trials is the experience and feedback of hunters themselves. Their day-to-day knowledge of local hunting practices and wildlife behaviour can provide critical insights into how the protective equipment performs in challenging environments. The project is especially interested in understanding how the devices affect dog safety, mobility, endurance, and overall hunting performance.

Over the coming hunting season, participating owners will use the equipment during regular hunting activities and report on its practicality, durability, and effectiveness. The results will help improve future protection measures and contribute to evidence-based recommendations for reducing conflicts between wolves and hunting dogs.

By working closely with hunters and testing solutions in representative field conditions, the LIFE Wild Wolf project aims to identify practical tools that can support coexistence between wolves and rural communities across southern Europe. The experience gained in Lazio is expected to play an important role in shaping future guidance and best practices.
