Waterbird developments

The AEWA Technical Committee met online 28-30 April to prioritise tasks for 2026-2028. This included many issues, ranging from preparing amendments to the status of waterbirds to developing guidance on interpreting compliance with the requirement to maintain favourable population levels.

FACE also received the green light to lead an investigation into the range of harvest data collection systems across the agreement area and to provide recommendations for harvest data collection at flyway level. This work will be carried out in cooperation with other members of the technical committee and will be delivered for the 10th Meeting of Parties in 2028.

For the longer-term vision of the Agreement, the technical committee will also contribute to the development of AEWA’s strategic plan 2029-2037. Even as an observer, FACE welcomes the transparent and open discussions on the functioning of the Agreement and the opportunity to shape the future of the conservation of migratory waterbirds.
