29 May 2026 Balancing wildlife and livelihoods: Highlights from Rovaniemi, Finland
The EU Large Carnivore (LC) Platform’s regional workshop, held on 7-8 May in Rovaniemi, brought together a diverse range of stakeholders to discuss coexistence among large carnivores, reindeer herders’ local livelihoods, and tourism. The event, organised as a side activity to the “Reindeer and Fish Days,” combined scientific presentations, policy discussions, and field visits to provide a comprehensive overview of current challenges.
The first day set the scene with contributions from the European Commission (DG ENV), national authorities, and the Finnish Reindeer Herders’ Association, highlighting the complex interplay between large carnivore management and reindeer herding livelihoods. Particular attention was given to the additional pressures from wildlife-viewing tourism, especially bear-watching activities, which can intensify conflicts with traditional land uses. Importantly, representatives from the Finnish hunting association and the Finnish Wildlife Agency also contributed to the discussions, bringing additional perspectives on large carnivore management and coexistence strategies.
The second day focused on local perspectives and stakeholder dialogue, with panel discussions addressing the impacts of bear-watching tourism and the need for improved inter-sectoral coordination. A field demonstration on reindeer carcass identification further underscored the practical challenges faced by reindeer herders in areas with high carnivore presence.
Overall, the meeting reinforced the importance of inclusive dialogue within the EU LC Platform, highlighting the need for balanced, locally adapted solutions that take into account conservation goals alongside the livelihoods of rural stakeholders and the role of hunting in sustainable wildlife management.
