17 Dec 2025 Farmers’ Demonstration in Brussels Highlights Ongoing Debate on the Future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
A large farmers’ demonstration is taking place in Brussels today (Thursday, 18 December), reflecting ongoing discussions and concerns across the agricultural sector about the current policy landscape. This protest highlights the level of debate surrounding the future of European agriculture and rural areas, particularly amid economic pressures, regulatory complexity, and long-term sustainability.
Across Europe, many stakeholders involved in and interested in land management have expressed concerns about the current structure of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
These concerns are diverse and not uniform, but they highlight a shared demand for a clear, autonomous CAP budget line—separate from other policy areas—to ensure CAP’s integrity, predictability, and clarity in how CAP objectives are translated into practical measures on the ground.
From FACE’s perspective, the key entry point into this debate is small game. A well-designed and effectively implemented CAP is essential for achieving positive outcomes for farmland biodiversity, including species like Grey Partridge, Brown Hare, Pheasant, Turtle Dove, and Quail. FACE continues to emphasise the importance of a CAP that supports practical, science-based measures which land managers can realistically apply and that contribute to measurable biodiversity recovery.
Greater clarity on objectives, incentives, and implementation will be vital if the CAP is to deliver for nature, farmers, and rural communities alike.
