New Developments in European Firearms Policy

At the end of February, the European Commission presented a new directive to combat the illegal manufacturing and trafficking of firearms. It introduces EU-wide definitions of firearms-related offences, harmonised penalties and measures to address emerging threats, such as 3D-printed weapons, while fully preserving legitimate activities by authorised dealers and citizens. The initiative aims to close gaps exploited by organised crime and strengthen cross-border cooperation through National Firearms Focal Points.

In parallel, the Commission has launched an evaluation of the Firearms Directive, with a feedback phase scheduled from 27 February to 27 March 2026 and an evaluation report expected in late 2026. FACE has made an initial submission to the European Commission (link) and will continue to monitor both initiatives closely to ensure that the legitimate use of firearms for hunters is not hindered.
