24 Feb 2026 Cyprus takes over EU Presidency
In January 2026, Cyprus assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU (until 1 July) as the concluding member of the current presidency trio, following Poland and Denmark.
The Council of the European Union is the institution where the governments of EU Member States are represented, and where ministers meet to negotiate, amend, and adopt EU legislation together with the European Parliament.
The Presidency is responsible for leading the Council’s work, coordinating negotiations on EU legislation, and representing the institution in its relations with the European Commission, the European Parliament, and international partners.
Alongside its main priority of EU defence and strategic autonomy, the Cypriot Presidency has committed to addressing the “triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution”. In particular, this Presidency will coordinate political discussions in three key areas:
- The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for 2028–2034, which will have a significant impact on farmland biodiversity and the conservation of small game species.
- The Water Resilience Strategy, which is essential for the restoration of wetlands and the improvement of habitats across Europe.
- The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), at which the Presidency will represent the EU during major global environmental negotiations. This meeting, in which FACE is an observer, will take place from 23 to 29 March 2026 in Brazil.
