FACE is active at European biodiversity convention in Strasbourg

From 8 to 12 December, the Bern Convention convened European governments and stakeholders in Strasbourg to set strategic directions to promote biodiversity conservation.

FACE actively participated as an observer, contributing expertise on sustainable wildlife management and hunting within the framework of biodiversity conservation. The Committee examined recommendations from working groups regarding amendments to the Convention’s appendices. FACE supported a flexible review of changes to the convention’s appendices based on the best available science, while promoting inclusive decision-making that involves stakeholders with technical knowledge.

A primary focus was on monitoring species, including large carnivores. FACE appreciated the presentation of a study on best practices for managing large carnivores and reaffirmed its dedication to coexistence strategies that incorporate hunting as a management tool where suitable.

Specific case-files were reviewed for follow-up. FACE emphasised the importance of transparent processes and involving stakeholders in resolving conflicts related to species management and habitat conservation – particularly regarding the case file on wolf management in Switzerland.

FACE’s involvement strengthened its position as a key stakeholder in European biodiversity governance. By advocating for sustainable hunting and conservation methods, FACE supports the objectives of the Bern Convention while ensuring that rural communities continue to play a vital role in nature conservation efforts.
