Other updates from the European Goose Management Platform
The 10th Meeting of the AEWA European Goose Management International Working Group was held in Brussels in June. At the meeting there were positive reports on the successes of the single species action plans for the Pink-footed and the Taiga Bean Goose, which were some of the first plans to included adaptive harvest management to reach their objectives. If all goes well revised versions of the plans will be adopted at the next meeting of AEWA parties in November 2025 in Bonn.
For the Greylag Goose despite improvements in data availability, it is still not possible to move to model-based adaptive harvest management of the Greylag goose populations. One persistent issue is the overestimate of numbers shot under derogation. However, the populations are still in good status, so current levels of hunting and derogations are considered as sustainable.
The platform is informally referred to as AEWA’s best kept secret. High praise, but it should be better known. Particularly as it is a good example of scientists, national authorities, and stakeholders taking a systematic approach to conservation decision making and problem solving. AEWA provides the framework and does an excellent job of guiding the decision makers through the process, making sure that each step is transparent and inclusive.
FACE has been part of the platform for the last 10 years and would like to see the knowledge and experience gained from the process be more rigorously applied in the management and conservation of European goose populations.
