It is with great sorrow that we have learned of the passing of a long-time friend of FACE, Jean Servat, on 24 November at the age of 83. Trained forest engineer fervent conservationist and passionate hunter, Jean Servat was the Director of Nature Protection at the French Environment Ministry during the 1970s, and at that time the chief negotiator for France during the development and adoption of the Birds Directive in 1979. Notably, Servat instigated the provisions for derogations for certain methods of regional hunting in this European text.

Further to the successful Falconry Exhibition organised in the European Parliament last month, Angus attended the 45th Opočno Falconry Meeting in the Czech Republic and gave an address at the closing ceremony. The meet is hosted by the Czech Moravian Falconers who are a part of FACE Member the Czech Moravian Hunting Union. The meet gathers falconers from all over Europe in a great spirit of camaraderie.

Economics is a crucial aspect of policy formulation and decision-making, especially during our current time of austerity. Unfortunately the data on the economics of hunting is dispersed and extremely varied across Europe.

There is a need to develop a Framework that can capture and place the various data sets without necessarily developing new or common methodologies.

On 8 November FACE participated in the European Commission Stakeholders’ Hearing in Brussels on the upcoming 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP16) to CITES, which will be held from 3-14 March 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand.
