Athens, 31 March 2012 - Representatives of the hunting world from 22 countries gathered in Athens, Greece for the 2012 FACE Members’ Meeting.
Hosted by the Hellenic Hunters’ Confederation and their President Nicolas Papadodimas, the Members’ Meeting focuses on EU policy implementation and enhances exchange between FACE Members.
March 3 marks one year to go to the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to be held 3-15 March 2013 in Thailand.
CITES is one of the world’s largest environmental agreements and seeks to regulate international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants at sustainable levels to ensure that this trade does not threaten their survival.
The FACE annual report covers September 2010-December 2011 and outlines the background and key activities of our main working themes in a new format which will run from January to December, in line with our financial reporting.
2011 has been a year of significant scope for hunters in Europe.
As you will see from this Report, the sheer variety, detail and focus of FACE’s activities is great, and perhaps surprising to some.
BirdLife International is heading a consortium to produce a third edition of Birds in Europe (BiE3) in a parallel process to the reporting under Article 12 of the Birds Directive. To launch this process a meeting was held in Mikulov, Czech Republic 8-10 February 2012, to which FACE’s Cy Griffin participated.
An updated version of the Annexes to the EU wildlife trade regulation, 338/97 was published today in the Official Journal of the EU. None of the amendments in this new publication are of direct relevance to hunters. Any countryside supporters of the European Squirrel Initiative will notice that three squirrel species (Callosciurus erythraeus, Sciurus carolinensis, Sciurus niger) have been listed in Annex B, in order to control their introduction into the EU.
A special interactive seminar took place at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday 24 January to discuss the management of invasive alien species in the EU ) – today and in the future.
Hosted by the Cyprus Federation for Hunting & Wildlife Conservation, the first FACE-Mediterranean Meeting of 2012 covered a full agenda including national reports, expert insights from The Cyprus Game Fund, the European Institute for Migratory Birds of the Western Palearctic (OMPO), the European Association of Traditional Hunts (AECT) as well as FACE (Europe).
