To mark the 25th Anniversary of the Habitats Directive and of the LIFE Programme, the European Commission together with the European Parliament, the Council Presidency and the Committee of the Regions declared 21st May as “European Natura 2000 Day”.

Last week, the European Commission published its “Action Plan for Nature, People and the Economy”, which was the result of the “Fitness Check” of the EU nature directives.

On Tuesday 7th March, FACE, the Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation of the EU, organised the conference “The future of the Nature Directives: Where are we going?”, hosted by MEP Karl-Heinz Florenz and MEP Renata Briano at the European Parliament in Brussels.

This wetland restoration project takes place on a hunter’s 30 ha landholding in Flanders (Belgium). The site forms part of a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under Natura 2000 and the objective is it to restore an Annex I habitat; an alluvial forest with Alder (Alnus glutinosa) and Ash (Fraxinus excelsior).

Brenne Regional Natural Park, managed by the Indre Department, contains 3000 artificial ponds, which have been created since the Middle Age for fish farming. Due to its natural richness, most of this wetland area is designated under Ramsar and the Natura 2000 Network

The European Commission acknowledged hunters’ engagement for Natura 2000 by selecting the ChasNat 2000 project of the Regional French Federation of Hunters from Languedoc-Roussillon as finalist for the Natura 2000 award.

The award aims to recognise excellence in the management of Natura 2000 sites and to demonstrate the added value of the Natura 2000 network for local economies and public on a yearly basis. The award ceremony will be held on 21 May 2014 in Brussels.

The European Commission is launching the “European Natura 2000 Award” to recognise excellence in best practices for nature conservation in Europe. This award is an excellent opportunity for hunters to showcase their commitment to biodiversity conservation.

The award aims to draw the public’s attention to the network’s success and to demonstrate its importance for the protection of biodiversity across Europe.

Discussions and debates are currently taking place regarding the introduction of the ‘non-intervention management’ concept in the Natura 2000 context.

FACE is concerned about the implementation and consequences of such a notion which excludes the majority of management activities from the areas and seems contradictory to the ethos of the Nature Directives.
